Master Gardeners of Stark County

Inmate Garden at Stark County Jail

The program was started at the Stark County Jail in the Spring of 2009 as a partnership between the Stark County Farm Bureau, the Master Gardeners of Stark County, Meals On Wheels of Stark & Wayne Counties and the Stark County Jail.

According to Maureen Austin, the Stark County Agriculture & Natural Resources Extension Educator,

"This program utilizes existing land and resources to benefit many people. Trustees will grow the vegetables, and in the process more people will have a greater understanding of where food comes from. In particular, it will shine a light on Stark County agriculture, which is abundant."

On Monday, June 15, 2009, the article Stark County Jail inmates are giving back, one vegetable at a time by Kristy Foster appeared on the Farm and Dairy website. Photos from that story are shown below (click on photo to read identification). The online article can be viewed here.
